Braces Q & A
What are Metal Braces?
Braces, as we know them today, have been used since the 1800s. These devices help correct overcrowding, crooked teeth, and gaps. Traditional metal braces use wires and brackets attached to the teeth to move teeth gradually into place. These braces are worn for approximately 18 to 24 months. The brackets and wires have improved over the years and are now at their most effective and comfortable. However, they are accepted as one of the most effective ways to move teeth into place in the shortest time frame. If you think that your smile would benefit from having braces, make an appointment with Dr. Jahn’Shahi to see if traditional braces will work for you.
How are the Braces Applied?
For traditional braces, the orthodontist will thoroughly clean and dry your teeth and apply a bonding glue to the dry tooth surface. This bonding agent attaches the brackets to your teeth. The glue doesn’t taste good, but it is non-toxic and will not hurt you. The orthodontist will thread the wire through the brackets and secure them with elastic bands. Once the braces are on patients will need to attend follow-up visits every 4 to 6 weeks. During these follow-ups, the wires are tightened, and elastic bands are replaced, and they take about 20 minutes.
Is it difficult to care for teeth while braces are being worn?
You will need to take more care when brushing and flossing your teeth while wearing braces. Daily hygiene is essential to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing can take some practice because of the wires and brackets, but you will receive cleaning and care advice when the braces have been applied. No matter what type of braces are worn, seeing the dentist at least every six months for professional cleaning is essential.
